We love the great outdoors at Vogel’s and want to celebrate people who share the same passion and take it one step further: our Outdoor Heroes!
For our final Outdoor Hero interview, we want to introduce you to a local fruit and vegetable shop owner called Sevret Gokce, who owns Parkway Greens. Championed by Time Out and Yotam Ottolenghi, the fruit and vegetable shop is full of weird and wonderful produce to liven up your food and bring exploring into the kitchen!
When did you open your shop?
Two years ago. I helped expand a franchise with two of my friends, and I run the Camden branch. It was a completely new venture for me, but after the economic meltdown, I had to start from scratch.
What was your motivation and inspiration behind opening a fresh fruit and veg shop?
We love fruit and vegetables and we love providing high quality and unusual fruit and veg. It fits perfectly in Camden.
How do you choose which vegetables to supply? We always love the varied and wonderful choices in your shop!
We go to two vegetable markets every night, Spitalfields and South London to select our produce. We only choose high quality produce that people can slot into their everyday lives.
Have you ever had to travel to supply the vegetables you do?
Every two weeks one of my team travels to France to source some fruit and veg we can’t get here. For example, he bought back some incredible tomatoes with him on his last trip, which I’ve been enjoying this week.
What is your favourite part of the job?
Meeting different people. The area is lovely, the people are lovely, and I enjoy building relationships with my customers. If they ask me a question about a piece of veg or fruit, I’m honest. If an apple is not as good as last weeks, I’ll tell them. Some people are taken aback by my honesty but I think it helps build brand loyalty and repeat customers.
How do you get your energy in the morning?
Fruit and veg! It’s all in your diet. Food can so easily make you feel lethargic. I work everyday, apart from some time off on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday evening, so it all also helps that I love what I do.
What’s your favourite produce out of everything you sell?
It changes season to season, but currently our mango from Peru and our clementine’s from France!
What’s your favourite toast topping?
I love chorizo on toast. Or cheese and salad!
What are your favourite outside spots/activities in London?
I love to be near the Thames. My son goes to a painting class and I love to walk by the river whilst I wait.
Where is your favourite place to visit in the UK outside of London?
I love Bath, its beautiful there, and Cambridge is too. When we have the weather, anywhere like Brighton or Bournemouth is great in the UK!
